From Classroom to Career: A Pre-Apprentice’s Journey into Manufacturing and Engineering

Oct 9, 2024

In today’s world, hands-on experience is a powerful tool for young professionals looking to kick-start their careers. For one high school student, a pre-apprenticeship program and a summer work experience with Re:Build Manufacturing opened doors to a future in mechanical engineering. In this blog, we hear insights from Calio, who shares insights from his journey through the IMT Pre-Apprenticeship at Burrell High School and his summer work experience at Re:Build Manufacturing.

Pursuing a Path in Mechanical Engineering

Before stepping into the world of Re:Build Manufacturing, Calio already had a clear vision for the future. When asked if he was considering a career in manufacturing, he said:

“Prior to Re:Build, I was considering a career in mechanical engineering. I’m still pursuing that goal because when I entered high school, I started exploring future careers. Given my strengths in the classroom and my long-term goals, I discovered mechanical engineering, and it piqued my interest.”

This early realization led Calio to seize opportunities that would set the foundation for a future career in the field.

Why Choose to participate in the IMT Pre-Apprenticeship MSSC Curriculum?

The IMT (Industrial Maintenance Technician) Pre-Apprenticeship MSSC curriculum is a gateway into the world of manufacturing. When asked what drove him to to participate in this program, Calio shared:

“I noticed that our school offered it as a class, and I knew that it would give me a head start into the engineering and manufacturing world.”

The curriculum provided valuable exposure and helped solidify his interest in the industry.

Valuable Lessons and Certifications Earned

Through the program, Calio gained practical knowledge of the manufacturing environment, which became invaluable during his work experience. He explained:

“I learned many details of the environment that manufacturers work in.”

Not only did the program provide theoretical knowledge, but it also awarded certifications in safety, quality, process, and maintenance, giving Calio a well-rounded skillset that he could bring to the workplace.

Hands-On Work Experience at Re:Build Manufacturing

During the summer, Calio had the opportunity to put his knowledge into practice through a work experience at Re:Build Manufacturing. His role exposed him to various aspects of the industry, and he had the chance to work with CAD and CAM software—tools often used by professional engineers.

“My favorite part was having access to CAD and CAM software. It gave me the ability to use the same programs many engineers use and learn how they work.”

Beyond software skills, he also gained insights into quoting processes—a critical aspect of how projects are managed in manufacturing.

How This Experience is Shaping Future Goals

When reflecting on how the summer experience at Re:Build Manufacturing will impact his future, Calio said:

“I see this summer experience as a way for me to be ahead of others going into the same career. Colleges and employers will see that I have had this experience, showing that I am committed to this field.”

This hands-on experience is giving Calio a competitive edge as he moves forward in his journey.

Next Steps and Career Aspirations

With a strong foundation laid, Calio is focused on the future. His next steps include:

“The next step in my journey is to apply to colleges and pursue a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.”

Although Calio is keeping his options open regarding specific career paths, he is confident in exploring opportunities both within and beyond manufacturing.

Advice for Future Students

For students contemplating whether or not to take the IMT Pre-Apprenticeship MSSC curriculum, Calio has this advice: “I would say if you want to get anywhere close to the manufacturing field, take it seriously because it could open opportunities for you to advance.”

His story serves as a powerful example of how early exposure, hands-on learning, and dedication can set the stage for a bright future.

As Calio continues his journey toward a career in mechanical engineering, his experience with Re:Build Manufacturing highlights the importance of seizing opportunities and gaining practical experience early on. For any student interested in manufacturing or engineering, programs like the IMT Pre-Apprenticeship MSSC curriculum can provide the head start needed to turn dreams into reality.
