When students think about careers, it can be hard to picture what a typical workday actually looks like. Reading about a job or watching a video can provide some insight, but nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand, which is why hands-on learning plays such an important role in career exploration, especially when it comes to manufacturing careers.

From operating advanced technology to solving real-world problems, modern manufacturing careers require a combination of technical knowledge, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. The best way for students to understand these careers is by doing what manufacturing professionals do every day: learning through experience.

Bringing Careers to Life

Many students are familiar with subjects like math, science, and technology, but they may not always see how those subjects connect to future careers. Hands-on learning helps make those connections clear.

When students build a product, troubleshoot a process, analyze quality data, or work with automation and robotics equipment, they’re applying classroom concepts in a real-world setting. Suddenly, math isn’t just something learned for a test. It’s a tool used to manufacture products, improve efficiency, and solve problems. These experiences help students answer one of the most common questions asked in school: “When will I ever use this?”. In manufacturing, the answer is often every day.

Learning by Doing at the SkillMill19 Learning Lab

At Catalyst Connection, we see the impact of experiential learning every day through our SkillMill19 Learning Lab. The Learning Lab was created to provide hands-on training opportunities for incumbent workers in manufacturing. Our instructors tailored some of the content to be available to job seekers and high school students as well. Today, students can participate in customized experiences that introduce them to modern manufacturing concepts, technologies, and career pathways. Instead of simply learning about manufacturing careers in a classroom, they can engage with equipment, explore real-world applications, and gain a deeper understanding of how products are made.

These experiences help students connect what they’re learning in school to careers they may pursue in the future. More importantly, they help students see themselves in those careers.
