Our 22-23 What’s So Cool About Manufacturing Middle School Video Contest has officially come to a close for the year! We are so appreciative of our funders, partners, manufacturers, and staff who have made this contest possible. We are so proud of our students and teacher coaches for producing such quality videos yet again! We kicked this year off with trainings for the teacher coaches of our two regional contests. The trainings were held at Robert Morris University and Private Industry Council. The schools then went off to visit the manufacturing companies they were partnered with and began filming! The students then each worked tirelessly to create 2.5-minute videos on what they thought was so cool about what they saw in these manufacturing facilities. The contest was completed with award recognition events.
PITTSBURGH CENTRAL AWARDS HIGHLIGHT
We had 11 schools and manufacturing companies paired up in our Pittsburgh Central contest. This regional contest culminated with an award recognition event at The Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.
Watch the Pittsburgh Central videos here.
The day consisted of more than just awards! Students were encouraged to interact with vendor tables, take part in a scavenger hunt, and participate in a hands-on activity! Our vendor tables at this event included: MECCO, JSP, JV Manufacturing, Haemonetics, Intervala, STEM Coding Lab, Moonshot Museum, and WQED. Our hands-on activity was conducted by our friends at BotsIQ! During this activity, the students used 3D printing pens to use their creativity and manufacture their own glasses. You can see some of these awesome designs in the images below! Our scavenger hunt was created by Catalyst Connection’s Hannah Kusenko. The scavenger hunt encouraged the students to explore the manufacturing focused aspects of the Heinz History Center’s Innovation Exhibit. The students had 30 minutes to explore the exhibit and answer the questions to the best of their ability. The students who finished all questions were able to enter a raffle.
Our Awards portion of the event was exciting as always!

We had 5 schools and manufacturing comapnies paired up in our Pittsburgh East contest.
Watch the Pittsburgh East videos here.
This regional contest culminated with an award recognition event at The Community Arts Center of Cambria County in Johnstown. This event also consisted of more than just awards! The day included a keynote speech from one of our Manufacturing Navigators, Ethan Birth from local company Global SFC. He spoke with the students about his manufacturing career pathway and gave them wonderful advice! We also had vendor tables and hands-on activities for the students. Our vendor tables included: Miller Fabrication and Global SFC. Our hands-on activities were conducted by both BotsIQ (3D printed glasses!) and our host, The Community Arts Center, who had the students use repurposed materials to create whatever came to their minds! The students’ creativity went wild with these two activities as you will see in the images below.
Our Awards portion of the event was exciting as always!
